Garden Guide — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 30 September 2026
Garden Guide is built so your garden stays yours. This page states, precisely, what leaves your device and when. There is no account, no sign-in and no server-side copy of your garden.
What stays on your device
- Garden data — plants, tasks, notes, reminders and photos — never leaves the device. It is stored in your browser's IndexedDB on the phone or computer you use.
- Tester mode for “Ask AI”, if you have the tester code, is stored only on that same device.
What is sent, and only when you ask
All five of the following are optional and start only when you press a button. None of them happens in the background.
- Botanical cross-check sends only the plant name and, if you typed one, the botanical name. Not your nickname for the plant, not its location, not your notes. Requests go to GBIF and to Kew's Plants of the World Online through this site's own proxy.
- Ask AI sends the plant name, its type, the potted and indoor flags and the location text you typed to this site's server, and from there to Google Gemini or Groq — only at the moment you press the button. Each device has a small free allowance per day; to count it, the server keeps a one-way code of a random app id and of your network address, which it deletes after two days. If the guide does not know the plant, its name and the AI's answer are passed to the guide's editor so the plant can be checked and added for everyone — nothing else about you or your garden. What the providers do with a request is governed by their privacy policies: Google, Groq.
- Photo identification sends the photo(s) you choose, which part of the plant they show and the app language — nothing else about your garden. Each photo is resized and re-encoded on your device first, which removes EXIF data including GPS position. It goes through this site's own proxy to Pl@ntNet (France), which states that submitted images are held only in memory during identification and are not stored. Our proxy does not store them either.
- Suggest for the guide sends the plant's name, its botanical name if you entered one, its type and the app language — only for a plant the guide does not know, and only when you press the button. There is no text field, so no notes, advice or contact details can be sent. It is stored without your IP address or any identifier, in a list the publisher uses to decide which plants to add to the guide.
- Guide update check sends the version number of the plant data pack you have, and nothing else.
None of this is linked to an identity, because the app has no identity to link it to.
What is not done
- No analytics.
- No crash reporting to a third party.
- No advertising, and therefore no advertising consent is asked. If that ever changes it will be a consent-gated decision, not a silent one.
- No data is sold or shared for marketing.
Notifications
If you switch on a reminder for a regular task, the app asks your browser for notification permission. Reminders are generated on your device and shown while the app is open or the next time you open it. Nothing about them is sent anywhere.
Deleting your data
Uninstalling the app, or clearing this site's data in your browser, deletes everything permanently. There is no copy anywhere else, so export a backup from Settings first if you want to keep it.
Children
Garden Guide is not directed at children and collects no personal data from anyone.
Third parties
- GBIF Backbone Taxonomy — gbif.org
- Plants of the World Online, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew — powo.science.kew.org (content under CC BY; we link, we do not re-host)
- Wikipedia — reference photographs are resolved at display time and never re-hosted by this app.
- Pl@ntNet — plantnet.org, photo identification, only when you press Identify.
- Your chosen AI provider, as described above.
Hosting and app distribution
- Hosting. This site and its proxy run on Cloudflare. To deliver any web page, Cloudflare necessarily processes connection data such as your IP address and browser type. We do not keep our own access logs and do not use this data to identify you.
- Google Play. If you install the app from Google Play, Google processes the data needed for the download and for updates under Google's privacy policy. We only receive anonymous, aggregated statistics from Google (such as install numbers), never who you are.
Legal basis (GDPR)
- Features you trigger yourself (cross-check, Ask AI, photo identification, suggestions, update check) — Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR, because you ask the app to do it.
- Delivering the site securely and counting the free AI allowance to prevent abuse — Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in a working, affordable service.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correction, deletion, restriction of processing, data portability and to object (Art. 15–21 GDPR). Because we hold no data that identifies you, we usually cannot find anything about you — but ask us and we will check. You may also complain to a data protection authority, for example the one responsible for us: Landesbeauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit Nordrhein-Westfalen (LDI NRW).
Changes
If the app starts sending anything new, this page is updated first, and the date at the top changes.
Who publishes this app (controller)
Garden Guide is made and supported by Rimagin GmbH, Marschallstr. 31, 45889 Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

Garden Guide — Datenschutzerklärung
Zuletzt aktualisiert: 30. September 2026
Was auf deinem Gerät bleibt
Was nicht passiert
- Keine Analytik, kein Tracking.
- Keine Absturzberichte an Dritte.
- Keine Werbung — und daher auch keine Werbeeinwilligung.
- Keine Weitergabe oder Verkauf von Daten zu Marketingzwecken.
Benachrichtigungen
Drittanbieter
- GBIF Backbone Taxonomy — gbif.org
- Plants of the World Online, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew — powo.science.kew.org (Inhalte unter CC BY; wir verlinken, wir hosten nichts neu)
